Helpful Links for Financial Literacy
These web-based financial literacy resources cover a range of topics, from bankruptcy to buying a first home. Many of the sites include interactive exercises and reference materials you can download, plus content in Spanish. Please contact us with suggestions for other links.
The Beehive - information on every aspect of managing money, from check writing practice, to child support, identity theft, home ownership, investing, and starting a business. The website is written in non-technical language, is available in Spanish, provides a straightforward presentation, and has some interactive elements like quizzes. (Information on family topics, health, and jobs is also available on this site.)
California Housing Finance Agency - information for first-time or low-income homebuyers, also available in Spanish. Resources for home loans and down payment assistance are also available, as well as interactive exercises to determine monthly mortgage payments.
California’s WE Connect Campaign - This site is designed to let California’s working families find out about resources that are available to help them reach their financial goals. Learn more about the Earned Income Tax Credit and other programs at this bi-lingual site. You can go directly to a personalized survey that will let you know what specific programs you are eligible
Financial Education Clearinghouse - Hosted by the National Endowment for Financial Education, this is a vast collection of financial education materials, created by a variety of groups to help underserved segments of the population (e.g., immigrants, individuals moving from welfare to work, the newly employed, and young workers). Some materials are free; others require a fee. You can also go straight to their Smart Money program.
F.R.E.E. (Financial Resources and Economic Education) ESL curriculum - designed for immigrants with limited English language proficiency, to help them gain control over their own finances, while improving their English language comprehension skills. It includes a teacher’s guide with notes and a student workbook, divided into six units: 1) You and Your Money; 2) Budgets; 3) Banking – the Basics; 4) Banking – Checking, Savings and ATMs; 5) Tips for Saving Money; and 6) Assets – Buying a Home Basics.
Hands On Banking (from Wells Fargo) - an overview of banking and managing money (also available in Spanish), with audio and learner-friendly language and visuals. There are short “lessons” on several topics. You will need the most recent version of Flash to view this site.
Managing My Money - a collaboration of the Action Partnership and the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE), this site contains topics such as budgeting, using credit wisely, living within your means, bankruptcy, and more. It has an especially useful selection of worksheets which can be downloaded.
Money Smart (from FDIC) - a Money Smart CD Rom is free of charge from the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation). Divided into ten modules, it covers: an introduction to banking services, getting a loan, checking accounts, budgets, savings, credit, loans, and home ownership. Each module contains a participant guide, an instructor guide and masters for making slides.
MyMoney.gov - the U.S. government's website information on budgeting and taxes, credit, and financial planning in English and Spanish, with PDF;s for downloading and links to other sites for more detailed information.
